Ransomware is wreaking havoc on South Africa’s economy, with private and public sectors feeling the heat. Minister of the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshaveni confirmed in a recent parliamentary address that cybercrime, particularly ransomware, is on the rise, hitting industries from telecommunications to healthcare.
In case you’re not familiar, ransomware is when cybercriminals lock up your data, demanding a hefty ransom for the key to release it. Some hackers go a step further—stealing sensitive information and threatening to leak it unless you pay up.
According to Sophos’ State of Ransomware report, it costs companies more to recover from an attack than to pay the ransom. The average ransom paid by businesses? A staggering $958,110 (R17.1 million). But, it gets worse. The cost to recover from these attacks often hits $1.04 million (R18.53 million), not counting the ransom itself.
Recent high-profile attacks show just how real the threat is. In June, the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) was attacked by the BlackSuit hacking group, forcing a shutdown of its systems. They stole 1.2TB of data and wiped backups. Fortunately, no patient data was lost, but the impact was serious.
The Department of Defense also wasn’t spared, with hacking group Snatch exfiltrating 200TB of data and even posting personal details of top officials online, including those linked to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
While the government is aware of the problem and the State Security Agency is working on responses, the threat continues to grow. But there’s some hope—collaborations between cybersecurity experts and law enforcement are starting to pay off. In fact, they’ve managed to freeze cybercriminals’ funds and dish out hefty prison sentences to a few notorious kingpins.
So, as these attacks continue to target vital sectors, South African businesses must stay vigilant. The cost of ransomware isn’t just in the ransom itself—it’s the long-term damage to your reputation and operations.
