Pick n Pay Clothing has unveiled its brand-new flagship store at Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban, and it’s more than just a shopping destination – it’s a celebration of both KZN’s vibrant heritage and Pick n Pay’s history. This revamped store, after a six-week makeover, reopened on August 7, 2024, as the third iteration of the Gateway store.
The space is a tribute to Pick n Pay founder Raymond Ackerman, with design elements reflecting the rich culture and natural beauty of KwaZulu-Natal. From ceiling panels inspired by sugar cane to light fixtures shaped like the Tugela River, the store is a visual feast. Local tribal prints adorn the fixtures, and even the fitting rooms (modeled after shipping containers) pay homage to Durban’s port history. Plus, local artisans were brought in to craft handmade baskets for a unique, community-focused touch.
Sustainability is also a priority. The store boasts a Level 6-star Green Building rating, with 50% of its materials being recycled – even the hangers are made from repurposed milk and yoghurt cartons! Energy-efficient features like LED lighting and systems to monitor energy usage further reduce its environmental impact. As part of their commitment to sustainability, Pick n Pay has planted 500 trees at Platbos Nature Reserve to mark the opening.
This flagship store is just one part of Pick n Pay’s expansion, with 50 new or revamped stores opening in 2024 alone. The retailer also plans to accelerate growth by adding clothing sections to 170 supermarkets.
KZN’s Luxury Retail Scene Rising
While Gauteng and Cape Town have long been the go-to spots for luxury shopping, KZN is catching up fast. Oceans Mall in Umhlanga is now home to international luxury brands like Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Michael Kors, while Gateway recently welcomed high-end players like Zara. Pick n Pay’s investment in its Gateway store is just another example of KZN’s growing retail appeal.
