KwaZulu-Natal’s Treasury MEC, Francois Rodgers, is shaking his head over the province’s massive R600 million annual spend on airtime and data for government officials. Yep, that’s right – almost half a billion rand to keep the province’s bureaucrats well-connected.
Rodgers, who’s already on a mission to streamline KZN’s finances, has been vocal about the need to trim the fat. In fact, he says it’s high time to make some tough decisions. And the airtime data bill? Well, it’s definitely one of those decisions.
What’s making him twitch even more? A preliminary investigation shows that some of this airtime may be going to ex-government employees and, wait for it, even deceased officials. Talk about a ghostly expense! With no room for waste in the current tight fiscal environment, Rodgers is keen to plug the leaks and ensure that taxpayers’ money goes where it’s actually needed – not to fill the phones of people who’ve long since exited stage left.
“It’s a huge amount of money being wasted,” Rodgers lamented. And he’s right. With the province (and the country) facing serious budgetary constraints, the last thing KZN needs is to be squandering millions on bills for people who aren’t even around to answer their phones.
Rodgers has put his team on the case, determined to root out waste and ensure that funds are used to build a sustainable economy, create jobs, and fight poverty. The province’s fiscal future might just depend on cutting back on these ‘unnecessary’ digital luxuries.
