A 34-year-old suspect has been arrested after allegedly hijacking two off-duty police officers and making off with their firearms. The dramatic incident took place on Thursday evening in Avoca Hills, where the officers, from the Greenwood Park SAPS, were held up by an armed suspect.
Luckily, a team of dedicated crime prevention officers and private security, hot on the trail, traced the suspect to Newton A in Inanda. There, they nabbed him and recovered both officers’ firearms—along with 30 rounds of ammo. But it didn’t end there. A search of his home uncovered two more unlicensed firearms and 12 rounds of ammunition. Oh, and the hijacked vehicle? That was returned too.
The suspect is expected to face charges in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Moral of the story? Never underestimate off-duty officers, and if you’re thinking of a life of crime, maybe take up knitting instead.
