Bill Gates is worried about today’s kids missing out on something that helped him become the billionaire we know today—free time. As a youngster, Gates had the freedom to explore, read, and think without the constant distraction of smartphones and social media. Fast forward to today, and kids are glued to their phones, leaving less time for the good old-fashioned fun of playing outside.
This shift from “play-based childhoods” to “phone-based” ones is having a major impact on kids’ mental health, social skills, and ability to focus, according to Jonathan Haidt’s 2024 book The Anxious Generation. Gates, who describes the book as a “must-read” for parents, worries that if he had grown up in today’s smartphone-obsessed world, he might not have developed the critical thinking and habits that contributed to his success.
Let’s be real—when you’re glued to your phone, are you really engaging with the world around you? Research shows today’s teens are spending less time playing outside and more time scrolling through addictive apps, contributing to a rise in anxiety, depression, and a serious dip in attention spans. In fact, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has warned that social media and smartphones are linked to mental health issues, with kids struggling to focus or even read a book.
So, what can we do about it? Haidt and his research partner Zach Rausch suggest some new rules for parents to help combat the digital age’s negative impact:
- No smartphones before high school. Give ‘em a good old-fashioned flip phone until they’re 14.
- No social media until 16. Most platforms set the minimum age at 13, but let’s be honest—kids are often bypassing that.
- Ban smartphones in schools. Let’s get back to focusing on learning, not Snapchat.
- More free play. Encourage kids to get outside and take on independent tasks, like a solo trip to the shops.
By limiting screen time and encouraging offline activities, parents can help their kids develop the essential skills needed to thrive—both online and in the real world. It’s time to give our kids a break from their screens and let them explore life beyond the pixels.
