What to Do if You Encounter a Snake or Get Bitten – A South African Guide

With snake season in full swing, especially during our sunny summer months, it’s good to know what to do if you encounter one – or worse, get bitten. Here in South Africa, snake sightings are as common as braais on the weekend, and we’re not just talking about the ones in your garden.

The other day, while hiking up Lion’s Head, I overheard several hikers swapping stories about snake encounters. The truth is, most snakebites happen when you least expect it, like when you step on one (ouch!) or while you’re asleep. But don’t panic – just know how to handle it.

What to Do if You Encounter a Snake:

  • Step Back! – Take at least five steps away and observe from a safe distance. Some snakes can spit venom up to 3 meters – don’t risk it.
  • Don’t Try to Catch or Kill It. – Unless you’re a certified snake whisperer with the right gear, leave it alone. No, your garden gloves won’t do.
  • Clear the Area – Get people and pets, especially dogs, out of there. Dogs love playing “hunt the snake”, which is not the safest game.
  • Call a Pro – Use the ASI Snakes app to find a qualified snake remover nearby. There are over 800 in SA, so don’t be shy.

What to Do if You’re Bitten:

  • Stay Calm – Yes, it’s easier said than done, but panic won’t help. Just make sure the snake isn’t hanging around for a second round.
  • Forget Tight Bandages – Don’t try to tighten anything around the bite site – it does more harm than good.
  • No Cutting or Sucking – We all know about the old wives’ tales (cue dramatic snake venom sucking), but trust us, that won’t work.
  • Seek Medical Help – Get to the nearest hospital, stat! Remove tight clothing around the bite and keep the affected limb elevated to help reduce swelling.
  • Oxygen Is Key – Snakebites can cause breathing problems, so proper oxygen treatment is essential.
  • Antivenom – Only doctors should administer this, and most bites don’t even need it. They’ll treat the symptoms first.
  • No Need to Bring the Snake – Unless you’ve got a snake under your arm (which is not recommended), just a photo will do to help identify the venom.

Keep Snakes Away from Your Property:

  • Keep It Tidy – Snakes love to hide in messy gardens. Keep things neat, and clear away rubble or firewood piles.
  • Remove Attractants – Water features, pet food, and aviaries attract small creatures, which in turn attract snakes. So, make sure your yard is less of a buffet.
  • Physical Barriers – Consider adding shade cloth or zinc sheeting around your fence to keep those slippery customers out.

By following these simple steps, you’ll reduce the chances of a snake encounter and know exactly how to act if it happens. Stay safe and, for the love of everything that’s good, don’t try to suck out venom!
