Lichtenburg, once known for its diamond rush and agricultural might, now finds itself in a state of serious decay. The irony? It’s called the “Town of Light,” but long electricity blackouts, often lasting weeks, are the new norm.
In 1926, a local farmer stumbled upon a diamond, sparking a massive rush that lasted a decade. But once the diamonds were gone, Lichtenburg shifted to farming, cement production, and even had South Africa’s largest Clover cheese factory—until 2021, when poor service delivery forced it to shut up shop.
Fast forward to today, and residents are drowning in broken promises. Electricity is scarce, with outdated infrastructure often vandalised, and water supply is a joke. The municipality provides water for just four hours a day, and many residents have gone without for weeks, even months. The water tankers are making a tidy profit, but for those without the means, it’s a daily struggle.
The streets of Lichtenburg aren’t much better—littered with garbage, potholes, and roads so bad they resemble dirt tracks. The town’s businesses are also suffering, with agriculture giants like NWK Limited and Agrico struggling to operate without consistent water and power. Some, like Susan Ludick, were forced to close their businesses, leaving dozens without jobs.
The local municipality? Well, they’re about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Despite efforts from businesses to assist with repairs, the town’s infrastructure continues to crumble.
