Durban’s sewage disaster is making waves, and not in the good way. The Green Scorpions, South Africa’s own environmental watchdogs, have ordered the eThekwini Municipality to stop dallying and start fixing its sewage issues – pronto. Why? Because untreated sewage has been gushing into the Umgeni River for over a year, and it’s starting to seriously muck up Blue Lagoon and the river’s health. Talk about a dirty situation!
After snapping some rather unflattering photos of the ongoing sewage flow, the Green Scorpions have slapped the city with a warning and a potential fine of up to R2 million. They’re not buying the city’s excuse that the problem’s been “fixed” either, especially after their inspectors caught more sewage in action during seven site visits between October 2023 and November 2024. In fact, they’ve found evidence that the problem has been festering for over two years – and it smells like a cover-up.
To make matters worse, the city has banned fishing and recreation in the estuary until the mess is cleaned up. A Coastal Compliance Notice has warned that if the municipality doesn’t fix things, they could face a criminal penalty. Not exactly the type of publicity any city wants, especially when it involves sewage!
The municipality has started clearing debris from blocked sewer lines (because apparently, even the sewers are hoarding junk). They’ve also been ordered to submit monthly progress reports and hire an independent ecologist to assess the environmental damage.
So, while Durban is grappling with some very smelly issues, it seems like there’s a lot of work to be done before locals can get back to their beaches without worrying about floating toilet paper. Watch this space!
