Ransomware is a big part of the problem. In 2024, businesses in South Africa paid an average ransom of R17.9 million, which doesn’t even cover the total recovery costs (R19.44 million on average).
One of the first big incidents of 2024 came in February when the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) was hit. They initially denied any data was compromised, but a ransomware group, LockBit, later dumped 668GB of stolen data online. Oops!
The Department of Public Works wasn’t spared either, suffering multiple breaches in 2024, resulting in R55 million lost. Meanwhile, the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) had to shut down its IT systems in June after BlackSuit hackers stole 1.2 terabytes of data, including sensitive patient information.
On the bright side, South Africa is fighting back. Cybersecurity professionals and law enforcement are teaming up to catch the criminals behind these attacks. After a major bust, phishing attacks in the country dropped, preventing countless scams. And who can forget the international success of Operation Jackal, which took down members of the Black Axe gang, responsible for global financial fraud?
Bottom line: Cybercrime in South Africa is on the rise, but there’s a concerted effort to stop it – and it looks like progress is being made.
