Matric Marks Leak: R100 for Early Results?

Well, it looks like the 2024 matric results have had an early “reveal” – and no, it’s not through an exclusive media release. Two clever university students, Kirav Doolabh from Wits and Veer Gosai from Stellenbosch, uncovered a major data leak. They found that a company called Edumarks had been offering early access to matric results for R100 a pop – a full week before the official release date. Talk about a spoiler!

Despite the official embargo until midnight on 14 January 2025, Edumarks had already started sending out results on 11 January. After investigating, Doolabh and Gosai discovered the source of the leak was likely Universities South Africa (USAf), an organisation representing South Africa’s public universities. The matric marks were sent to USAf on 11 January, and voilà – Edumarks was in business.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is now investigating the breach, with Minister Siviwe Gwarube promising that they’ll deal with the issue, whether the leak came from their side or through cybercrime. Meanwhile, Edumarks claims it’s all about helping students access their results faster, but critics argue it’s just a scam waiting to explode.

For now, the Edumarks website seems to have vanished – maybe it’s too busy dodging the Hawks? We’ll see how this one plays out, but for now, it’s all a bit of a matric mystery.
