In a major win for local job seekers, ActionSA is celebrating the arrest of 268 illegal foreign workers found in a factory in Newcastle’s Mabhodini (Riverside Industrial) area. This is a big step towards tackling the widespread issue of illegal immigration and the unfair employment of undocumented workers that ActionSA raised earlier this year.
Back on March 1, 2024, we led a march to the Department of Labour, demanding inspections of local factories in the Mabhodini area. Our investigations revealed that many businesses were hiring illegal foreigners instead of local South Africans – a slap in the face to the high unemployment rates, particularly among our youth.
At ActionSA, we believe jobs in Newcastle should go to the people of Newcastle. The arrest of 268 workers is just the beginning, and we’re calling on authorities to continue enforcing immigration and labour laws. We also urge businesses to ensure that they’re hiring people with valid documentation. After all, the local community deserves better than exploitation.
But we’re not stopping here. We’re also turning our attention to foreign-owned factories in KwaSithebe, Mandeni, where workers have been subjected to shocking conditions. It’s time for the government to get serious and take consistent action across the province.
